Diary dates: What’s on in July 2026

Highlights from the CIOB calendar for the coming month.

Building Safety: Effective Communication Between Dutyholders, 14 July, 6.45pm-9.30pm, Village Hotel, Maidstone

The Building Safety Act 2022 marked a decisive shift for the built environment in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire. Dame Judith Hackitt’s Building a Safer Future report called for systemic cultural change across the industry.

While skills, knowledge and experience have long underpinned competence, the Act places new emphasis on the need to develop and demonstrate behavioural competence. Central to this is how dutyholders communicate throughout the building lifecycle.

At present, most organisations cannot clearly evidence how safety-critical decisions are communicated across dutyholders. That gap represents a material risk.

This interactive session focuses on closing that gap. It examines how safety-critical decisions are actually communicated in practice and introduces practical tools you can apply within your own organisation.

This CPD session will be delivered by Alex Mullings, director of Mullings Associates.

Understanding Fire: Fundamentals, Behaviours and Global Perspectives

20 July, 12pm-1pm, online

Gain a practical insight into fire behaviour in the built environment and discover how fires ignite, spread and can be controlled. As global attention on building safety continues to grow, this session explores the impact of climate, materials and construction methods on fire dynamics, alongside key international fire safety regulations shaping the industry today.

You will discover: the fundamentals of fire science, including ignition, fuel, spread and containment; how climate conditions and construction materials influence fire behaviour; key international fire safety regulations and standards; insights from global case studies and industry expertise; and how to embed fire safety principles into design and construction from the outset.

The speakers are Russell Dowman MCIOB PCQI from Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd; Matt Bright head of building safety at LiveWest; and Tim Jackson, partner and head of technical inspection and compliance at Calfordseaden.

Cutting Through the Noise: AI in Construction

21 July, 5.30pm-8pm, West Herts College, Watford

Join CIOB Hemel Hub for a session to ground the conversation on what AI means for SMEs, contractors & larger construction companies

Artificial Intelligence is the most talked-about topic in construction today, but for many businesses, it remains a buzzword. Between the hype, the fear of getting it wrong and a lack of clear strategy, many firms are either ignoring AI entirely or investing in tools they don’t know how to use safely.

This CPD will be a panel discussion looking at the following topics: orientation versus automation; the “data readiness” reality check; security, governance and “shadow AI”; finding the right starting point (or next phases).
