Highlights from the CIOB calendar for the coming month.
Site visit: Gorse Ride Redevelopment Project, 8 September, 2pm-4pm, Wokingham
Come and join CIOB Reading Hub with Katherine Jones (social value manager) at Wates and experience a fabulous site tour of the Gorse Ride Redevelopment Project.
The regeneration of Gorse Ride is one of the council’s flagship housing projects and will see 249 new modern homes built on the site, a massive 74% of which will be affordable homes to meet growing local demand. The phased regeneration will take place over a number of years.
All the new homes have been designed to be energy efficient with high levels of insulation and low-carbon innovations such as air source heat pumps. This helps tackle the fuel poverty crisis while helping to reduce the borough’s carbon footprint.

Site visit: The Folkestone Leas Lift, 10 September, 4.30pm-6pm, Folkestone
The Grade II-listed Leas Lift is one of only three water-balanced lifts remaining in the UK. The restoration work involves bringing the lift back into operation, developing a new upper station area and extending the former cafe.
Once complete, the Leas Lift will once again become a tourist destination, as well as hosting exhibitions, community engagement and events at the newly renovated Lower Station.

Battle of the Brains, 10 September, 6pm-10pm, Newcastle
Join CIOB for Battle of the Brains, sponsored by EDEN ENERGY – a lively and engaging quiz night designed to bring together members of CIOB and NAWIC for an evening of friendly competition and networking. Re-visit: Brighton Seafront Arches, 24 September, 10.30am-12.30pm
A chance to tour the Madeira Terrace seafront arches and promenade in Brighton in the second phase of restoration.
Mackley has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council to restore Madeira Terrace, a Grade II*-listed 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton. The project includes the refurbishment of 28 of the arches. Works include dismantling all cast iron elements for shot blasting and repairs, followed by painting and reassembly. CIOB visitors will learn about the dismantling of the arches and the complex process involved in removing the Victorian structure. They will also be able to observe elements of the structure being reassembled and see some of the challenges faced by the team.

Return to HS2: Calvert to Greatworth Project, 25 September
The A422 Compound near Brackley is a key hub within EKFB’s Calvert to Greatworth section of High Speed Two, supporting major earthworks and infrastructure delivery. This visit offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at a live construction site, including a project overview and guided tour led by EKFB Project Director Tony Wehby FCIOB, alongside senior leaders from EKFB and HS2.
