Construction professional Roger Carter is seeking to challenge one of the industry’s most carbon-intensive materials with a new engineered alternative.

Polibeam, created by Bow Gill, and being brought to market by Polibeam Ltd. is an alternative to concrete beam and block flooring incorporating pre-installed insulation. The product is the first of its kind to secure a patent globally and its Agrément Certificate is pending.

“Traditional concrete beam-and-block flooring is heavy, difficult to handle, uses a lot of water and also generates considerable waste, particularly when combined with insulation products,” says Carter.  “We’ve developed an alternative that removes much of that waste from the process, making construction safer, easier and more efficient.

“We believe the industry needs products like this as it moves away from relying on carbon-intensive concrete. Our system provides a practical, lower-carbon alternative that helps reduce waste while preparing the sector for the next wave of embodied carbon legislation, particularly in areas such as social housing. The world needs an alternative to unsustainable concrete, and we believe this is it.”

Polibeam comes as a pre-finished beam pre insulate and drops into position and can carry the same load as concrete.

“There will be some reticence,” acknowledges Carter but adds “but it’s similar to moving away from copper piping in heating.”
