Constructionarium is expanding its professional development by offering a new programme for employees taking their first steps into management and supervision.

The not-for-profit organisation has launched a new series of Management and Leadership courses, beginning with a First Time Manager/Supervisor programme for people who are new to management or preparing to take on their first supervisory responsibilities.

Although Constructionarium has traditionally focused on construction and the wider built environment, the new course has been developed for managers across all industries. It focuses on the transferable skills needed to lead people effectively, including communication, confidence and managing teams.

The move represents an expansion of Constructionarium’s existing portfolio of short courses, which covers areas such as technical skills, health and safety, mental health awareness, and surveying and setting out. It is a CITB-approved training organisation and CPD-approved training provider.

Constructionarium said the move from being a high-performing employee to becoming an effective manager can represent a significant career transition. While technical expertise may have helped individuals secure promotion, leading people requires a different set of skills, behaviours and confidence.

The new course is intended to help participants develop those skills as they take on their first management or supervisory responsibilities.

Stronger foundation for leading teams

The course also builds on Constructionarium’s longstanding emphasis on experiential learning. The organisation was established in 2003 to bridge the gap between the theoretical education of engineers and the practical skills required in industry. It now operates a 19-acre training facility in Norfolk, where delegates can gain experience in a simulated construction environment. More than 14,000 people have completed its experiential learning projects.

Its flagship programmes involve multidisciplinary teams planning and constructing scaled replicas of major structures, while taking responsibility for areas such as health and safety, project management, commercial control and client engagement. The approach is intended to develop skills including communication, decision-making, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.

The organisation’s expansion into first-line management training comes as employers continue to face the challenge of developing people as they progress through their careers. Constructionarium said the new programme is intended to give those moving into management a stronger foundation for leading teams successfully, rather than relying solely on their technical expertise.

The First Time Manager/Supervisor course starts on 16 October and forms the first part of Constructionarium’s planned new series of Management and Leadership training.
