The Building Safety Regulator’s latest Gateway 2 update indicates more steady improvement since it launched a remediation plan in April, with an increase in both decisions made and the approval rate.
In the 12 weeks to 28 June 2026, BSR made 368 Gateway 2 decisions, with a 77% approval rate (284 cases), compared with 358 and 75% in the previous 12-week period to 30 May.
Approvals for the latest period represented 6,544 residential units, and there are currently 138 new-build and conversion applications in progress, totalling 30,393 units.
The regulator said it was looking to add more staff to meet demand and reduce determination times – it currently has 152 internal and 493 external staff on the programme.
Gateway 3 application numbers revealed
The BSR figures also show that there were 277 applications for Gateway 3, which is the final stage for residential schemes before residents can move in.
The BSR said: “We are fully aware of the importance of Gateway 3 and are working with applicants to solve issues and move towards approvals rather than rejections. This is currently being reflected in the high approval rates.”
Regionally, the regulator’s figures show that 57% of the 368 Gateway 2 decisions were made in London. In addition, it has separated internal refurbishment works into a new category. These works make up the majority of its current live caseload.
The BSR has produced a remediation toolkit for applicants to help them navigate the process and understand the regulatory expectations.
Charlie Pugsley, acting BSR chief executive, said: “We continue to see positive improvements in the numbers of approvals for existing building remediation cases and new-build projects, as well as significantly faster decision times for newer applications.
“Ongoing improvements following our external remediation improvement plan are also being seen, with existing building approval rates at 85% over the last 12 weeks – already above our minimum 65% target for the year.”
