Modular specialist Reds10 has begun groundworks for three single living accommodation (SLA) blocks for army personnel at Baker Barracks, Thorney Island, West Sussex.
The project involves building a total of 315 en-suite bedspaces, 242 of which will be for junior ranks, 47 for senior non-commissioned officers and 26 for junior officers.
The modular blocks will be built using modern methods of construction (MMC), and aim to achieve high building energy efficiency standards.
The blocks’ sustainable design features include photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps and a ‘smart’ energy management system, which uses digital technology to improve energy efficiency.
The project will also deliver more than 400 car parking spaces with 20 electric vehicle charging points.
The project is being delivered under the Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s (DIO) Army SLA Programme, a £1bn scheme to build 16,000 new bed spaces over the next 10 years for Armed Forces personnel.
