A finance director at London quantity surveyor Leslie Clark Construction Consultants has been jailed for four years for stealing £1.8m from the firm to pay off his gambling debts, reports Construction Enquirer.
Andrew Stubbs, 41, forged more than 2,000 cheques over eight years, exploiting a company system that had no mechanisms in place for checking sums under £1,000. The fraud only came to light when HM Revenue and Customs issued a demand for unpaid tax.
Southwark Crown Court heard that Stubbs’s actions almost bankrupted Leslie Clarke, which had to lay off staff and refinance the firm. Jailing Stubbs, Judge Jeffrey Pegden QC said it was difficult to overstate the impact that Stubbs’ criminal offending had on the partners and employees of the firm.
