Southend United Football Club has won planning permission to build a new 22,000-seater stadium.

The new development at Fossetts Farm will also involve the construction of a hotel and around 1,500 homes, as well as a club shop, restaurant and conference space.

Around 500 homes will also be built on the stadium’s existing site at Roots Hall once the club has relocated.

The decision on the stadium, designed by architect Populous, will now go to the government for approval.

Southend, which is to be granted city status following the killing of local MP Sir David Amess, saw its local team drop out of the Football League for the first time in 101 years in May last year.
