Redbridge Council has approved plans to build a new lido in Valentines Park – the first in London for decades.

The lido will use solar panels for energy generation, air-source heat pumps, water recycling systems and energy-efficient lighting.

It will include a 25m six-lane swimming pool, a coffee shop, car parking, changing facilities, a gym and dancing studio. There will also be a meeting room, a children’s splash pad and an outdoor picnic area.

Construction is expected to begin later this year for a scheduled public opening by autumn 2025.

The new facility will be close to Valentines Park’s original outdoor pool, a popular destination for families across East London and Essex from 1923 to 1995.

The plans were unveiled on the same day that Tooting Bec lido, the oldest in London, reopened to the public following a £4m revamp.
