Members in the North East enjoyed a site visit to The Riverwalk in Durham, hosted by Sir Robert McAlpine in December.
Rebranding The Gates shopping centre to The Riverwalk reflects the vision of transforming Durham’s leisure offering and revitalising the centre.
Sir Robert McAlpine will deliver the £30m project on behalf of a fund managed by Clearbell. The main construction programme includes remodelling the existing shopping centre’s layout to create 35,000 sq ft of terraced restaurants along the river, a six-screen Odeon cinema, a new parade of 23 shops and 253 student accommodation units.
A complex multi-use regeneration project located close to the World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral, requires close working relationships with Durham County Council planning department and the design team.
Removal of the existing structure above basement parking levels to facilitate the construction of a new lightweight structure will allow more open space to be created, including a new public square.
The development is due to complete in late summer 2018.
