The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has launched a new 5k Run and Walk initiative aimed at bringing construction professionals together to promote wellbeing and raise funds for CIOB Assist.
Set to take place on 3 October 2026, the event will encourage CIOB members, their families and colleagues to walk, jog or run five kilometres in support of the charity, which provides financial and wellbeing support to members facing difficult circumstances.
The initiative will be linked to local Parkrun events where possible, although participants will also be encouraged to organise their own activities if there is no nearby event.
CIOB said the campaign is designed to highlight the importance of physical and mental wellbeing across the construction sector, where long hours and high-pressure environments can take a toll on workers.
Alongside the event, CIOB is promoting the NHS Couch to 5K app to help participants build up to the challenge gradually. Members will also be able to connect through a virtual fitness club on Strava to share progress and encourage one another.
Amanda Pilgrim, associate director – company engagement at CIOB, says the initiative can be adapted.
“We are encouraging everyone to take part, wherever they are in the world, in a way that works for them. Walk, jog or run. On your own, with colleagues or with your local hub. And wherever you are based, you can get involved. If there is no Parkrun nearby, you can organise your own local event and still be part of the wider effort.
“This is about more than a single day. It is about creating a shared moment across our community, with members, families and colleagues all stepping forward for the same cause.”
Funds raised through the initiative will support the ongoing work of CIOB Assist, which offers guidance, practical help and financial support to CIOB members and their families.
CIOB is also seeking sponsors to support the event and expand its impact. Further details on registration and regional activities are expected in the coming weeks.
