New research by Don Samarasinghe MCIOB indicates that VR-based training can play an important role in preparing the construction workforce for emerging sustainable technologies

The construction industry is under growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, improve productivity and adopt more sustainable building practices.
However, many emerging technologies, including 3D printing with earth-based materials, continue to face a major challenge: a lack of practical industry training and workforce readiness.
This is addressed by new research, Can virtual reality help build a more sustainable construction industry? by Samarasinghe, Lakshitha, Feng and Manuel.
The paper investigated how virtual reality (VR) could support sustainable construction training through the development of EcoPrint VR, an immersive training tool designed to simulate 3D printing processes using raw earth materials.
The study explored current challenges in sustainable construction training and developed a VR-based learning environment that combines technical knowledge with hands-on virtual experience. Using a mixed-methods research approach, the project evaluated participants’ learning outcomes, confidence levels and overall training experience.
Significant improvements in confidence
The findings demonstrated strong potential for VR-based learning in construction.
Participants reported significant improvements in confidence and practical understanding after completing the VR training sessions. Confidence in operating 3D printing equipment increased by 85%, while confidence in material preparation skills improved by 76%. Participants also highlighted the value of being able to practice construction processes in a safe, risk-free and interactive environment.
The research suggests that immersive training technologies may help reduce training costs, minimise material waste, and support wider adoption of sustainable construction methods. International examples such as the TECLA 3D-printed earth housing project demonstrate how advanced construction technologies and sustainable materials can be successfully integrated.
At the same time, the study identifies areas for further improvement, including user comfort during VR sessions and the need for more structured instructional guidance within virtual environments.
The paper concludes that VR-based training can play an important role in preparing the construction workforce for emerging sustainable technologies. As the industry continues its transition towards low-carbon and digitally enabled construction practices, investment in innovative training approaches will be critical to improving both industry capability and long-term sustainability.
