Bakerloo line extension moves forward with consultants appointed

The Bakerloo line extension project is pushing ahead after Transport for London appointed Aecom and architect WW+P to carry out a feasibility study.

Over the next eight months they will provide design services for the proposed four new stations, including Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate and Lewisham.

TfL expects the extension to be operational by 2040, subject to planning and funding.

Aecom will be responsible for all engineering matters, including civil, structural, mechanical and geotechnical engineering, as well as stakeholder engagement and consent.

As lead architect, WW+P will work on the design elements of the feasibility study.

The Bakerloo line opened in 1906 and now runs from London’s north-west suburbs to inner city south-east London, where it ends at Elephant and Castle.

TfL consulted on its Bakerloo Line extension proposals in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Almost 9,000 people participated in the consultation, with most respondents (89%) making positive or supportive comments, according to the transport authority.

The project stalled after the covid pandemic impacted funding.

TfL appointed Dragados UK earlier in the month for the design and construction of new passenger tunnels at Elephant and Castle underground station.

The new ticket hall is designed to accommodate the proposed Bakerloo line extension.
