Aecom profit halves after streamlining

Colin Wood, chief executive Europe, UK and Ireland of Aecom

Pre-tax profit at the UK operations of consultant Aecom fell by half to £6m in the year to 2 October 2020, as the business incurred one-off costs “to streamline the business”.

In August last year, Aecom announced that it was cutting 500 jobs in its UK and Ireland business, and that chief executive was departing to be replaced by Colin Wood. Chief operating officer also left the business.

At the time, Aecom said the coronavirus pandemic had impacted many of its clients and that it was re-shaping the business to meet the demands of its markets.

Aecom’s turnover for the year increased by 10% on 2019 to £481m, with the business experiencing growth in the UK across all of its markets.

It added that while the effect of covid-19 on construction had been “profound”, it has managed the impact and had not experienced any project cancellations to date.
