Artist’s impression of how the revamped St Enoch centre will look
A construction worker has been killed at Sir Robert McAlpine’s £40m redevelopment of the St Enoch shopping centre in Glasgow.
It is not known how the accident happened, nor whether the individual killed was working directly for Sir Robert McAlpine or for a subcontractor.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “A 43-year-old man has died after sustaining serious injuries while working at a construction site at the St Enoch Centre Glasgow on Thursday 22 August 2019. Emergency services were called at 320pm, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A joint Police Scotland and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation is ongoing and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A spokesperson for Sir Robert McAlpine said: “Our thoughts at this very sad time are with the family, friends and colleagues of the worker involved. We are working closely with the HSE and Police Scotland. However, as there is now a live ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide any further comment.”
The contractor is building a nine-screen Vue cinema, nine restaurants and new retail and leisure facilities at the centre, adding 33,000 sq ft of space, bringing the total footprint of the St Enoch centre to 880,000 sq ft. The project is due for completion in summer 2020.
A spokesperson for St. Enoch centre said: “We are devastated by this tragic incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the man involved.
“We will of course co-operate fully with the investigation.”
