Wates Group has appointed Brian Long as its new group health, safety and wellbeing director.

Long’s 25-year career in the built environment includes 17 years at Lendlease in Australia and the UK, where he was group head of sustainability and safety. He was also senior vice-president of safety and sustainability at Aecom in Spain.

Most recently, he was group general manager of health, safety and environment at Australian development and construction company Mirvac.

He will join Wates in September and sit on the group’s executive committee, reporting to chief executive Eoghan O’Lionaird.

Long said: “I have been very impressed with the genuine care Wates has for the wellbeing of its employees and partners, as well as its excellent track record in managing safety. I am eagerly looking forward to joining the company later this year to run its industry-leading work in this space.”

O’Lionaird said: “I am delighted to welcome Brian to the Wates Group to lead this agenda, and to maintain our exceptionally high standards and drive our continued and longstanding commitment to the wellbeing of everyone who works for and with us.”
