Turner & Townsend has been appointed to provide cost management services for Giants on the Quayside, which is set to be the Europe’s tallest observation wheel when it is built in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The 140m-tall wheel, dubbed the ‘Whey Eye’, will be five metres taller than the London Eye.
The 33,000m² development on which it sits will be a destination for food and drink, leisure and sports activities. Currently, the area is a derelict brownfield site.
Phil Lynagh, chief executive officer of World Wheel Company said: “We are delighted to have Turner & Townsend as part of the professional team helping to deliver the Giants on the Quayside development. It is testament to World Wheel Company’s philosophy of not only creating and developing unique and smart concepts, but also working alongside the best in the business to bring that creativity to life.”
Paul Humble, project director at Turner & Townsend in Newcastle said: “Having provided feasibility cost advice to the World Wheel Company on this project, we are delighted that our appointment has been extended to cover the full project life-cycle. There is a lot of excitement across the region about Newcastle’s wheel both as a tourism and leisure destination, but also the regeneration that is taking place on the Quayside.”
