Planning consent has been officially revoked for the A303 Stonehenge project, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.

Stonehenge could be added to a list of ‘in danger’ World Heritage Sites due to plans to expand the nearby A303 and build a tunnel through the landscape.

The government has given formal consent to the construction of a new tunnel under the historic site of Stonehenge.

A ruling in the High Court, following a judicial review, has quashed an order granted by transport secretary Grant Shapps for a £1.7bn road tunnel near Stonehenge to go ahead.
