The second recipient of the CIOB Lance Saunders Commemorative Award in Site Management was presented to Keiron Smith of ID Smith Construction Services.

The award is given to outstanding individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, a commitment to continuous learning and excellence in site management.
It celebrates the legacy of Lance Saunders FCIOB within the institute and the wider construction industry. A dedicated CIOB fellow and passionate advocate for professional development, Saunders firmly believed in achieving excellence through education.
Smith began his construction journey as a plasterer apprentice (winning an apprentice of the year award in 2018) but was ambitious and has most recently untaken Level 4 Diploma in Site Management. He received distinctions for all but one of his assignments. As part of the course he managed a complex Passivhaus barn conversion a challenging build that has been entered into the RIBA Sustainability Awards and South East Construction Awards.
Smith is passionate about renewable and sustainable construction and also organised management software for his company to maximise efficiency and profitability.
Smith said the Diploma was not just about professional development but also to challenge himself personally. “I wanted to be recognised not only for my knowledge but to also feel pride being part of an industry that is built of different individuals from a range of back grounds whom share knowledge and experiences to future generations. With the Building safety Act it was imperative for me to develop knowledge and understanding of not only my legal obligations but, how my practices can play a part in developing safety standards in modern day construction. This system enables us to review any part of the build at any one time.
“Furthering my career I would like to gain chartership within the CIOB and continue to gain experiences from complex and challenging projects. I am well underway in furthering my knowledge in sustainable construction and modern methods of construction and I strive to push my company along this route to build not only incredible homes but, something that maintains healthy environments for future generations.”
