ScotRail is rolling out digital twin technology across 25 stations and depots to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
Provided by OptimiseAI, the technology analyses data and makes real-time, proactive, suggestions for managing heating and lighting and other energy use.
Following a successful pilot, OptimiseAI has used its AI forecasting tool Predict to instantly create digital twins for 25 sites using existing data streams.
However, eight large sites will undergo deeper analysis and optimisation, aided by the addition of more sensors, IoT devices, and submetering to enrich the data feeding the digital twins.
These sites are: Glasgow Queen Street, Aberdeen, and Inverness stations; as well as depots at Corkerhill, Shields, Yoker, Haymarket, and Inverness.
A scalable approach
A performance dashboard will provide centralised, network-wide visibility via a RAG (red-amber-green) map, helping energy teams identify and respond to inefficiencies.
ScotRail head of sustainability Poul Wend Hansen said: “With this further rollout of digital twins, we can gain a deeper understanding of our energy use and take meaningful steps to reduce emissions across all our stations and depots. It will help us build a greener future for Scotland’s Railway.”
Nick Tune from OptimiseAI said: “This kind of scalable approach represents the future we’re heading toward: where efficient building estates will be the backbone of resilient cities.”
