Willmott Dixon has finished a new huge complex for members of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, home to the Wimbledon Championships.
The state-of-the-art centre has 12 new tennis courts, including six indoor acrylic and six outdoor clay facilities, and an underground tunnel that connects to the main estate.
It also has a 338-space underground car park for use by members during the year. This will also be used as a transportation hub during the Championships.
The timber-clad building features a undulating double-curved roof. Heat pumps and photovoltaics support energy saving.
Willmott Dixon said the carpet tiles used are 100% carbon neutral and the entrance mats are made from goat hair rather than plastic.
The project also includes extensive outdoor landscaping throughout the grounds, following the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s guiding principle of ‘Tennis in an English Garden’.
Willmott Dixon beat Sir Robert McAlpine for the All England Lawn Tennis Club complex contract in 2019, which according to construction information specialist Glenigan was valued at £70m. Works began following the 2019 Wimbledon tournament and continued during the pandemic.
The project marks the contractor’s latest high-profile sports development, having previously completed a £30m fit-out of the East Stand at Twickenham Stadium.
