The first units to roll off the production line of Legal & General’s new offsite factory in Leeds have been revealed.
The modular unit has been made for Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) and designed by architect Wimshurst Pelleriti and is a 26 sq m one-bedroom apartment that it calls LaunchPod.
RHP intends to use the product to break into the “intermediate” market – for those who do not qualify for social housing but are priced out of the private market. RHP is understood to be in discussions with Richmond Council over a 30-home development featuring the pods.
Legal & General Homes has signed a long-term lease with Logicor on a 51,000 sq m warehouse in Sherburn-in-Elmet, between Leeds and Selby. It has capacity to produce 3,500 homes a year when it gets up to full speed.
Overall the company has stated it plans to roll out a pipeline of 70,000 homes over the next decade from the new offsite factory.
RHP chief executive David Done said: “I’m really excited about this new product and the opportunities it can create for those struggling to rent in London. I was blown away when I first saw the prototype – it is spacious, modern and high quality.
“This is just one of the ways we’re aiming to combat the housing crisis and will contribute to our target of investing £250m in new affordable homes over the next eight years.”
