Geoff Wright, former construction and project management director at Hammerson and past president of the CIOB, has died. He was 76.
Wright was the first client to be appointed president of the CIOB when he took up the role in 2005. He later remained active with the CIOB on panels such as Special Fellowship, Honorary Life and as a director of Englemere.
He worked for Hammerson, which he joined as a junior project manager in 1969, until his retirement aged 62, when he was director, responsible for 190 projects across the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Canada and the USA totalling over 24m sq ft of space and in control of an annual budget of £600m.
In his retirement he took on non-executive director posts at Severfield Rowen, Ashwell, Waterman, BRE Trust and started his own consultancy business, Geoff Wright Consulting.
Wright attended Whitgift School in Croydon as a boy and gave service as a member of the Court of the Whitgift Foundation and chair of governors.
A Territorial Army member, he was officer trained at Sandhurst and was chair of SERFCA, an MOD organisation responsible for tri-service, reserve forces and cadet administration, property management, recruiting and employer liaison for the south east.
He had three children. His son Tim said: “I will remember him as someone who despite being exceptionally busy, always made time for us. He’d always come to watch us play sport as we were growing up, despite the inevitable pressure that he’d have been under.
“In his latter years, he remained very savvy and would often be an excellent sounding board for us children as we embarked upon our own careers, relationships and lives. He will be greatly missed by us all.”
