Nuclear regulator warns Morgan Sindall after incident on Cumbria site

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has instructed Morgan Sindall to improve its health and safety measures following an incident at the Devonshire Dock Complex at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The incident happened on 21 August 2023 when a load consisting of a single crane rail was dropped from a crane controlled by the contractor.

Although no one was injured, ONR said it identified the potential for harm and risk of serious personal injury.

Devonshire Dock Complex is operated by BAE Systems Marine.

ONR has issued an improvement notice to Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure Ltd under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Section 2(1) and 3(1), the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 3(1), and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, Regulation 8(1).

The regulator cannot discuss further details about the incident because of the ongoing investigation.

Morgan Sindall has until 28 February 2024 to comply with the improvement notice.
