Oxford-based contractor Symm & Company, which can trace its history back 200 years, has collapsed into administration.
Around 150 people at the business, which also has a decorating arm specialising in silk and fabric hanging, paint and wood finishing techniques and heraldic gilding, have been made redundant.
Accountancy firm Critchleys confirmed that it has been appointed as administrator of the business.
In a statement, it said: “The company has experienced recent tough trading conditions and the current pipeline of work is not sufficient to continue this longstanding and highly regarded Oxford brand. The directors have explored various alternative paths but have taken the difficult decision to appoint an administrator.
The company operated its joinery and cabinetry business from two sites in Pershore, Worcestershire with its main construction function operating from Oxford.

Very sorry to hear this news, especially of such an old and established firm
Very sad to read indeed. Also a significant loss to heritage sector of our industry and a loss to the City of Oxford, the University and its wonderful world class colleges.
