McLaren Construction has launched its first apprenticeship programme for digital construction. As National Apprenticeship Week draws to a close, McLaren head of digital information management Thomas Flannery reveals why the contractor has launched the programme and what it looks for in a digital construction apprentice.

Why has McLaren invested in a digital construction apprenticeship programme? What benefits do you anticipate it bringing to the business?

To support future business growth, we realised it was important to develop our own pipeline of digital construction talent. A digital construction role will touch all aspects of a project and is vital in ensuring new technology is adopted and correctly used. The apprenticeship programme helps secure this long-term capability and further embeds a culture of innovation within McLaren.

As it is our first year, the intention was to take on one apprentice. However, the programme attracted more than 400 applications, and we were so impressed by the quality of candidates that we decided to open it up to a second apprentice. They started in January this year and both are already making positive contributions.

What does a digital construction apprentice learn during their apprenticeship?

We wanted to ensure that the apprenticeship goes beyond the classroom. Therefore, we have tailored the programme to ensure a rounded, practical experience that will give them an understanding of the full range of roles that go into project delivery at a main contractor, and how digital construction supports all of these.

Mentoring is another important aspect, as we also want them to understand how McLaren operates, the culture and values, and be representative of our can-do attitude. They will therefore be paired with other non-digital roles to support this.

What do you look for in a digital construction apprentice?

I imagine this is no different for a QS or design apprentice, but you must have a passion to work in the construction industry. Other character values, such as a willingness to learn and curiosity about how projects come together, are also important.

Finally, and this is just my perspective, the digital construction professionals who tend to do best are those who are proactive and willing to challenge others when something does not look right. In some regards, we want our digital construction team to be our first line of defence in spotting and highlighting potential risk.
