A 26-year-old worker from Laing O’Rourke died on Monday (14 August) following a serious accident at the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium construction site.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Twitter that the man was injured around 1pm and taken to hospital, where he later died.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the man sustained severe injuries as a result of an incident involving heavy machinery. Works have been suspended to allow for an investigation to take place.

Laing O’Rourke is the main contractor for the £555m stadium, which is expected to be completed for the 2024/25 season.

Everton Football Club said in a statement that an investigation was “immediately” launched by Laing O’Rourke, which will work with the police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish the full details of the incident.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said in a statement: “We can confirm that earlier today a member of our team, who was carrying out work for one of our subcontractors, was seriously injured in an incident. He was taken to hospital via ambulance, where he sadly died.

“We are shocked and saddened by today’s tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man and our wider project team.

“The police and the Health and Safety Executive are on site and we have suspended work until further notice. We will cooperate fully with any investigation that follows.”

  1. Sad to hear about such an event. The family and dependents are the ones that will continue to suffer. Get them to look into the Lighthouse Club, the construction industry’s benevolent fund. It’s there for us all and our relatives and families.
