Joanne Tierney tells CM People about the challenges of taking on a new role at Eco Green Group and shares her long-term career goals.
Tell us about your day-to-day responsibilities and what your role typically involves.
My role is incredibly varied, which means that I am constantly on the go. As Eco Green Group continues to grow rapidly, my responsibilities may range from developing recruitment strategies to establishing clear policies and procedures, introducing employee development programmes, as well as supporting initiatives that enhance employee wellbeing and position the organisation as a great place to work.
Operating in such a fast-moving environment requires me to stay agile, while also delivering work in a timely and effective manner.
What’s the most challenging part of being Eco Green’s first head of people and culture? And what’s the most exciting part?
The most exciting part of my new role is being involved in such an ambitious and people-centric organisation from a relatively early stage. By introducing my role, the company has visibly demonstrated that people are at the forefront of everything it does.
The most challenging part for me personally is that I am new to the construction industry. However, I thrive on a challenge and I am looking forward to learning from my colleagues and gaining a thorough insight into the sector.
How do you keep your skills and knowledge up to date?
I actively network with my HR peers to stay abreast of developments and understand how to implement these in a pragmatic way. I regularly read HR publications and reports, and scan the press to understand how HR best practice, the sector and the economy are moving.
As a trustee in a local charity, I am able to network with professionals in other industries and in different areas of expertise. This all gives opportunities to expand my knowledge base.
What are your long-term career goals?
I have been with Eco Green Group for a relatively short period and I am excited about what the future will bring. Our growth strategy for 2026 and beyond is extremely ambitious and I am looking forward to helping shape the direction the company is going in.
Being part of a company on such a strong upwards trajectory is a great opportunity. I see myself and my role developing with Eco Green Group and, in time, growing the people function.
Any advice for those considering the next step to a management-level role?
My advice would be to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed in a management role. Surround yourself with people who you respect and can learn from, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Consider working with a mentor who will constructively challenge you and support your growth.
It’s essential to understand the business and environment in which you operate. So, keep up to date with developments both at local and bigger-picture level.
People are at the heart of every decision I make – treat people in an equitable way and model respectful behaviour in the workplace
Challenge yourself and accept growth opportunities, whether that’s within the company, the sector or the wider community.
