The Vale of Glamorgan Council has appointed Morgan Sindall Construction to take on a school project in Wales that ISG had started just months before its collapse.

Morgan Sindall will continue building the new £22m Ysgol Llyn Derw special educational needs (SEN) school in Penarth, a town 5km south of Cardiff.

The project is an expansion of nearby Ysgol Y Deri, the UK’s largest SEN school for students aged three to 19 years with a range of learning and physical needs and autism and which featured in the BBC documentary A Special School.

Ysgol Llyn Derw’s design incorporates solar panels and a hybrid generator to power the site, all built from energy-efficient materials to contribute to a carbon-neutral finish.

The space will also feature natural light and ventilation wherever possible, green roofs, with other environmentally friendly features integrated to enhance biodiversity.

Morgan Sindall’s Cardiff business is currently putting together a work plan before construction resumes.

Aecom remains the project manager of the scheme.

ISG started building Ysgol Llyn Derw as a £20m project at the end of April. However, the company went into administration in September, paralysing dozens of live public and private sector projects and making more than 2,000 employees redundant.

Since then, some projects have already been handed over to other contractors, including a £24m community hub in north-east Derbyshire.

Last month, Cardiff Council launched an emergency plan to save a £110m education campus in the Fairwater area of the Welsh capital, which ISG was building.
