HSE to prosecute Falcon over crane collapse deaths

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is bringing a prosecution against Falcon Tower Crane Services, the largest tower crane supplier in the UK, after three men lost their lives following the collapse of a crane in Crewe, Cheshire.

Rhys Barker, 18, from Castleford, David Newall, 36, from Bradford, and David Webb, 43, from Northampton, died following the incident at a construction site on Dunwoody Way on 21 June 2017.

Falcon Tower Crane Services Ltd is accused of breaching Section 2(1) and Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

The charges follow a long and complex investigation by HSE. A Plea and Trial Preparation Hearing is due to take place at Chester Crown Court on 6 October 2023.

  1. Unfortunately, this is not the first occasion for Falcon Cranes.
Being the largest crane provider would warrant the most stringent H&S procedures to be adopted.
    Tragically 3 more lives lost.
    Very sad news!

  2. Seven years after the event and the HSE has decided to proceed with a prosecution. Notwithstanding the Section 1 and 2 charges against Falcon we need to ask some serious questions of the HSE as to whether they are fit for purpose when they take this length of time to reach a decision.
