Former construction minister Lee Rowley has announced that he has been handed the ministerial brief for housing and planning.

Rowley resigned from former prime minister Boris Johnson’s government in July.

He is now serving as a junior minister under secretary of state for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Simon Clarke in Liz Truss’s government.

In a tweet, Rowley said he had a “big job ahead” to raise standards and service in the sector. He is the 13th housing minister in 12 years.

There has not been an announcement on who takes over ministerial responsibilities for construction. Rowley was appointed as construction minister in September 2021, replacing Anne-Marie Trevelyan. At the time, that made him the sixth person to hold the position in two and a half years.
