Spencer Group’s building and civils division has won contracts for ground and enabling works needed to connect substations in Yorkshire and Merseyside to new battery storage facilities.
Together, the batteries have a storage capacity of 185.5MW and can hold energy from wind and solar.
The contracts were awarded after Spencer Group made it onto National Grid’s Project Civils Framework for expanding the electricity network.
Both projects involve extending the existing substations.
At Bradford West substation in Yorkshire, crews are carrying out temporary works for safe access to the site and preparing the ground by grouting and filling in legacy coal seams and voids. Work started in June and is due to finish this autumn.
In Merseyside, Spencer teams will prepare for the extension of the Rainhill substation in St Helens by building foundations for a new transformer and building an access road around the perimeter of the site. Work is expected to finish in early 2027.
“These works at Bradford West and Rainhill are an important part of the investment we’re making to maintain, upgrade and develop the electricity transmission network, increasing network capacity and creating the infrastructure needed for new connections,” said National Grid construction director Mark Brindley.
Spencer Group project manager Paul Harrison added: “Both projects involve working within logistically complex and safety-critical environments, which we are highly experienced in.”
