Heathrow is using One Click LCA’s decarbonisation platform in planning new construction or renovation projects.

With access to the One Click LCA platform, Heathrow project managers will have access to what is claimed to be the world’s largest construction LCA database, with more than 300,000 data points. The platform will also allow them to make automated and verified life-cycle analyses for entire projects, understanding and affecting emissions from materials production to structure decommissioning.

The airport will use data from its preferred material options as reference points for future projects, as a baseline from which the carbon reduction potential in new material options will be measured.

Last year, the airport introduced a carbon management standard. Heathrow’s 2024 sustainability report, published in March 2025, noted: “We introduced a new carbon management standard for capital projects to track, manage and reduce supply chain emissions associated with all stages of delivery. Informed by pilot projects with suppliers, the standard is aligned with the global PAS 2080 standard for carbon management in infrastructure, encompassing the PAS 2080 hierarchy to avoid, switch and improve.

“Each capital programme in the current H7 regulatory period (2022-26) at Heathrow now has a carbon budget to help drive accountability, and we are exploring ways to highlight carbon reduction opportunities early in the project lifecycle to incentivise low-carbon investment decisions. The choice of materials for construction projects can make a big difference, and we are developing a database of low-carbon materials to support their use.”

More-informed decisions

Alistair Awcock, infrastructure director at Heathrow, said: “The aviation sector has a critical role to play in supporting the UK’s 2050 net-zero targets. At Heathrow, we manage over 4.5 square miles of infrastructure – how we design and build has a significant influence on our carbon footprint.

“Partnering with One Click LCA will help us better measure and understand the embodied carbon in our construction projects, enabling more-informed decisions as we work toward our long-term sustainability goals.”

One Click LCA is used by the likes of Skanska, WSP, Foster + Partners, LafargeHolcim, ArcelorMittal, Arcadis, Geberit and Saint-Gobain.
