CIOB chartered building company Gilbert-Ash has been appointed as the main contractor for a major refurbishment of one of Tate Liverpool’s galleries.
The gallery, on Royal Albert Dock, has some of the most important displays of modern and contemporary art in the UK.
The £30m project has been designed by 6a architects and will include a new public Art Hall on the ground floor, new gallery spaces over three floors, and the opening of the gallery’s facade.
Gilbert-Ash said it will also improve the building’s environmental standards and thermal performance by replacing services using fossil fuel with renewal energy and introducing natural ventilation to improve energy performance.
Tate Liverpool is housed in a listed 1846 warehouse that was redesigned by Sir James Stirling and Michael Wilford in the late 1980s as part of the Royal Albert Dock redevelopment.
Gilbert-Ash recently completed a major revamp of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Construction of the Tate Liverpool project is expected to start in early 2024.
