A 45m tall and 32m-wide dome silo, made of airform, has been inflated at the Port of Tilbury, Essex, as part of a new multi-million-pound cement factory project.
Building products supplier Aggregate Industries, which commissioned the structure, said it is “one of only a handful of its kind in the UK”.
The inflatable silo will be used to store up to 30,000 tonnes of cement to support demand for construction materials in the region.
Aggregate Industries worked with US-based company Dome Technology to inflate the dome.
Tim Fry, project manager at Aggregate Industries, who is responsible for overseeing the engineering and construction of the new facility, said: “With this project, Tilbury joins a small number of pioneering locations in the UK with access to the latest advancements in dome silo technology.
“Once operational, the facility will support both local and regional demand for conventional, low-carbon and circular cementitious construction materials.”
The cement facility is expected to be operational in 2026.
