Galliford Try has launched an interactive card game which aims to dispel myths around construction and encourage young people to take up careers in the sector.
The ‘Construction Career Cards’ game, developed with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and three other contractors from the North Wales Construction Partnership (Read Construction, Willmott Dixon and Wynne Construction), represents 40 roles in the industry.
Each contractor involved provided a selection of real images representing a job role designed to give a realistic insight into the position and settings individuals could be working in.
Galliford Try hopes the cards will be an accessible way to start a discussion about careers, skills and training, and can be played in several ways. It has already trialled the cards at a Careers Wales high schools event and a pre-employment programme at HMP Berwyn, and plans to use them as part of its programme to promote careers in schools and careers events.
Joy Woods, social value manager for Galliford Try North West, said: “At Galliford Try we are committed to our Early Careers population with over 400 of our employees being either graduates, trainees or apprentices. Using these cards within schools will allow us to showcase our exciting industry and encourage more people to choose a career in construction.
“These cards are a great tool to dispel some of the myths which exist around our industry – the cards open the conversation about the huge variety of roles, the numerous routes into Construction, and the number of future opportunities, in a fun and engaging way.”
Ceri Rush Jones, CITB local manager, North Wales said: “The Construction Career Cards are a fun and informative way to learn about a diverse industry. The variety of roles on the cards show the range of construction opportunities open to people of all ages and backgrounds – something CITB promotes through our skills and training work in the sector. This collaboration is a very good way of raising the profile of construction careers.”
A free copy of the ‘print yourself’ card set is available via [email protected]. A Welsh language version is also available.
