The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has endorsed a provisional concept design for a “vertiport” in the emirate created by UK headquartered architect Foster + Partners.
Vertiports are airports for electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs).
The conceptual facility would be located next to Dubai International Airport and integrated with the metro network.
It is one of four sites being considered for a vertiport by Skyports Infrastructure and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.
The terminal has an elevated deck for take-offs and landings, with the terminal building wrapping around the airfield and connecting to the arrival and departure lounges.
An overhanging roof and façade will prevent direct sunlight and overheating to passengers.
The building’s façade corresponds with the adjacent metro station and has edges covered in green landscaping.
David Summerfield, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said the “advanced air mobility” industry “will transform the way people travel in Dubai”.
