Highlights from the CIOB calendar for the coming month.
Doncaster Gateway One site visit, 5 October, 10am-12pm, Doncaster
Join CIOB for an exclusive site visit to Gateway One, Doncaster’s landmark new digital technology hub, currently under construction by Willmott Dixon.
Located adjacent to Doncaster railway station, the £32m development forms part of the wider city centre regeneration programme and will provide more than 50,000 sq ft of workspace designed to support the growth of digital and technology businesses in the region.
Attendees will gain first-hand insight into the construction of a modern, sustainable commercial development, including its design, delivery strategy, construction methods and sustainability aspirations. Gateway One is targeting operational net zero carbon performance, alongside an EPC A rating and BREEAM Excellent certification.
The visit will also provide an opportunity to hear directly from the project team about the challenges and successes involved in delivering a major city-centre scheme, and explore the role construction is playing in supporting Doncaster’s economic growth and digital future.

Tall Buildings Midlands Conference 2026, 13 October, 8.30am-7pm, Birmingham
The Tall Buildings Midlands Conference will take place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on 13 October, bringing together industry professionals for a day of reflection, inspiration and insight.
Featuring council members, policymakers and professionals responsible for designing and delivering tall buildings, the conference will explore the region’s tall buildings strategy, investment opportunities and key challenges facing architects.
The day will conclude with the Tall Buildings Awards, celebrating excellence across the sector.

Newbury Architectural Walking Tour, 14 October, 10.30am-12.30pm, Newbury
Led by local historian David Peacock, this guided tour will explore Newbury’s rich architectural history.
Starting at the historic Corn Exchange, the tour will trace more than 1,000 years of the town’s history, exploring how it has evolved through the centuries. Particular focus will be placed on architecture from the 17th century to the present day, with a look at some of Newbury’s most interesting and distinctive buildings.

RIS:ES Coombe Valley Hospital – site visit, 15 October, 4.30-6pm, Bexhill-on-Sea
This site visit will explore the new £60m, 54-bed acute inpatient mental health hospital in Bexhill, currently under construction by Kier for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
The 57,393 sq ft facility is being delivered as part of the Re-designing Inpatient Services in East Sussex (RIS:ES) programme and will provide three 18-bed wards, with individual bedrooms and en suite bathrooms, alongside outpatient services and training facilities.
The fully electric building will feature high levels of insulation and energy-efficient systems, with solar panels covering much of the roof. Electric vehicle charging points will also be provided, while rain gardens in the car park will collect surface water run-off before it is discharged into the local watercourse.

Behind the Wire – Modern Methods in Practice, 21 October, 9.30am-1pm, HMP Channings Wood, Denbury
The CIOB Exeter Hub and Kier are hosting a site tour and CPD event exploring how modern methods of construction (MMC) are being used as part of the prison expansion programme at HMP Channings Wood.
The expansion will create an additional 494 prison places and includes two new fully electric, energy-efficient T60 houseblocks, supporting the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through efficient design.
Project director Simon Parsons will explain how different MMC approaches are being combined to improve programme efficiency, including precast concrete and off-site manufactured building services risers. Attendees will then have the opportunity to tour the new blocks and see how the buildings are being assembled.

Master Your Networking Game, 23 October, 9.30am-2pm, Leeds
CIOB Tomorrow’s Leaders and G4C Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber are joining forces for a CPD event aimed at students, graduates, apprentices, early-career professionals and others looking to strengthen their professional networks.
The session will focus on personal branding, self-confidence and practical networking techniques, with Paul Corke from 10Eighty exploring mindset, leadership, communication and personal transformation.
The event will introduce the 5Ps networking model as a practical framework for developing communication skills, professional presence and personal branding. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with peers from across the industry.
By the end of the session, participants will have a practical toolkit of networking strategies and increased confidence in professional situations.
