An event aimed at showcasing the breadth of career opportunities available in construction will bring industry professionals and aspiring talent together in Birmingham next month.

CIOB Midland’s Tomorrow’s Leaders will host Constructing Careers: Paths into the Industry at STEAMhouse on 19 October, with the event designed to highlight the different routes people can take into the built environment.

It comes as the construction sector continues to face challenges around attracting and retaining the skilled workforce it will need to deliver future projects.

Supported by Kier, the event will feature a panel discussion involving professionals at different stages of their careers and from a range of disciplines. Speakers will discuss their own routes into the industry, including apprenticeships, graduate schemes, career changes and other non-traditional pathways.

The session will also give attendees the opportunity to ask questions about working in construction and gain practical advice on how their existing skills and interests could translate into careers across the sector.

Chris Drew FCIOB, chair of the CIOB Birmingham Hub, said the event would help demonstrate the breadth of opportunities available.

“Constructing Careers is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the diverse and rewarding careers available within the construction industry,” he said.

“By bringing together professionals, employers and aspiring talent, we can help open doors for the next generation and demonstrate the real value of a career in the built environment.”

Alongside the panel, a careers and networking area will provide attendees with the opportunity to meet employers, consultants, contractors and specialists from across the industry.

Organisations attending include Kier, Quantem, Colemans, STRABAG, AtkinsRéalis, Sisk, Cundall, Fitzgerald Contractors, Derry Building Services, Retrofit Academy, SDC, Winvic, Tilbury Douglas, Spacion and Howells, with further exhibitors expected to join.

The event is open to CIOB members, student members and anyone aged 18 or over interested in exploring a career in construction.

Constructing Careers: Paths into the Industry takes place from 4pm to 7pm on 19 October 2026 at STEAMhouse, Belmont Row, Birmingham. Attendance is free but advance registration is required.
