QS apprentice with Anglian Water

Which technological advances in the sector are you most excited about?

With Anglian Water we have recently used virtual reality through one of our alliances. We’ve used Meta and a company called Resolve 3D, for the 3D models. The technology allows project teams to work in a shared workspace. It enhances collaboration and highlights risks before they actually come up. We had a trial period and we used it across 47 different sites and it attributed to over 4 million in cost savings. Immersive technology can just transfer transform project delivery.

What do you think is the most important issue facing the construction industry at the moment?

Climate resilience and then sustainability. They’re the biggest issues but also where most of the opportunity for innovation lies too. Our industry is not just only about delivering assets, it’s also about creating infrastructure that supports the environment’s health, biodiversity, long term water management.

What would be your dream project to work on in the future?

We have two new reservoirs in the pipeline which are the first reservoirs we’ve built since 1960. So as a QS apprentice being involved in those projects is a great opportunity to contribute to the cost management and risk mitigation.  We also have another project laying hundreds of kilometres of pipe from Lincolnshire to Essex to keep that water supply flowing. It’s a big project but another innovative approach to be involved with.

I’m from South Africa so whenever I’m in London and I see the high rises projects there I think being on site in central London would excite me and is obviously very different to work I’m currently on
