Infrastructure services firm Aecom has joined the government’s Northern Powerhouse programme, which aims to stimulate economic growth in the region.
Aecom follows the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which became a member of the scheme in August this year.
The company is involved in several projects in the North, including the Mersey Gateway, Liverpool South Corridor and the development of Clean Air Zones in Manchester and Liverpool. It also holds strategic partnerships with universities in the region to foster innovation and research and development opportunities.
Andrew Jones, cities programme lead at Aecom, said: “The Northern Powerhouse is a vital programme that is facilitating the transformational change required to turn the north’s individual cities and towns into a connected economy. Successful delivery requires a focus on skills, innovation and infrastructure and Aecom is committed to supporting the programme through our project work and as a major employer in the region.”
Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, Jake Berry, said: “It is vital we have world-class infrastructure across the Northern Powerhouse to push forward our ambitions for more prosperous communities prepared to take full advantage of all the economic opportunities that come with our departure from the EU on 31 October.
“From my recent meeting with Aecom it’s clear their key role in major projects transforming the north, contribution to the growing green collar economy and commitment to investing in the next generation of northern talent makes them an exciting addition to our growing network of Northern Powerhouse partners.
“Together we can build on the government’s £3.4bn Local Growth Fund investment to create jobs, boost economic growth and level up across the whole north.”
