What innovative technology are you most excited about finding out more about in 2019, and why?
I’m most excited about the use of augmented reality in construction. With the latest technological advancements demonstrated by both Trimble and Synchro (recently acquired by Bentley) using HoloLens, we would like to see real use cases for on site.
Emmy Award-winning production house Unit9, for instance, is working relentlessly on their innovative AR tech with 3D Repo and we cannot wait to field test it with them. Stay tuned!
What tech are you tempted to buy in new year sales?
The Odyssey+ mixed reality headset from Samsung (pictured above). MR Windows headsets provide the benefits of VR with the tracking technology of HoloLens, which means no more lengthy calibration and setup making it far more user friendly and portable. The beautiful AMOLED display will really showcase our projects in Unity.
What individual or company is going to be “one to watch” this year and why?
Mission Room – their immersive 360-degree VR displays are invaluable, especially on infrastructure projects such as railways, highways and similar, to examine designs and survey data collaboratively.
It can mean the difference between being on time and on budget versus being delayed and overpriced. We predict that each major project in the UK eventually use such a VR room as standard.
Which construction technology do you want/expect to see make the leap into mainstream adoption this year?
With the help of Buro Happold, Rhomberg Sersa, HOK, Atkins, Arup and UCL, we’re bringing the idea of small delta updates (also dubbed as the Internet of BIM) to real-life projects across the country. This will provide increased turnaround on designs and improved efficiency.
What industry event are you looking forward to attending and why?
We always look forward to Digital Construction Week where we are exhibiting again. Excuse the plug, but our co-located British Information Modelling talk series deserves a mention, in 2019 we plan to run three seminars presenting the latest and greatest in digital design and construction from across the industry.
