Wates Living Space is to begin extensive external works on one of London’s most prominent brutalist residential blocks, the Grade II listed Trellick Tower.
The building in Kensal Town will benefit from a £7.2m restoration programme with works including repair, renovation and replacement of concrete, cladding and approximately 1,000 windows.
Trellick Tower was designed by Hungarian Modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger and was built in 1972 as part of the Brutalist architecture movement that arose from the 1950s to the mid 1970s.
The tower became the inspiration for JG Ballard’s novel High Rise, which was made into a film starring Tom Hiddlestone in 2015.
Wates will first begin work on the six-storey Block B, which will be followed by the external refurbishment of the 31-storey Block A in June. Overall completion is expected by summer 2018.
A fire at the iconic building earlier last month also left a flat on the 27th floor badly damaged.
Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters and officers tackled the fire at the tower in which more than 200 people were evacuated.

Now this is exciting! Love looking at this building on my way into London from the train, but a renovation is much needed.
