SES Engineering Services (SES), formerly Shepherd Engineering Services and now owned by Wates, has become the first mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractor (MEP) to achieve BRE BIM Level 2 Business Certification.
The certification comes one month ahead of the government’s public sector project compliance deadline.
A specialist in offsite manufacture, SES has been an early adopter of BIM, using 3D modelling on projects for more than 15 years and embedding data into models since 2010.

As strong proponents of process efficiency in construction, SES see BIM and its integrational benefits as key to driving continuous improvement in the delivery of MEP services.

Survey finds BIM management skills lacking
Meanwhile, a survey by BRE Academy of 300 industry professionals on the industry’s skills shortages has found that BIM management skills are seen as lacking, on a wider industry as well as an individual company or organisation basis.
The survey, whose respondents ranged from leaders to subcontractors, helps the industry understand which skills are in short supply and which are needed now and in the future.
The survey identified a need to establish clear and appealing career pathways for young entrants to the industry, with 74% of respondents saying that these should be “actively promoted” and 67% saying that there should be more focus on promoting construction’s high-tech and digital aspects.
