Wates is running a competition to find new sustainable innovations for the second year.
The Wates Sustainable Technologies Services initiative is aimed at promoting the uptake of sustainable solutions in the construction industry to deliver low carbon buildings.
The competition is looking to identify and support innovative, market-ready, low carbon, sustainable products or technologies that can offer direct resource efficiency benefits to commercial buildings, such as reducing energy in use, carbon emissions, waste and water usage without compromising the comfort and working conditions of building users.
Successful applicants will be given the opportunity to present their product to a panel of key decision makers from Wates Smartspace, its supply chain and customers. The panel will then consider which technologies to adopt on upcoming projects.
Selected suppliers will also be included on Wates’ central database of innovative technologies and be promoted in bids/tenders.
Examples of some of the innovations that have been identified through the process are:
- An energy saving additive for central heating systems that can save up to 15% on heating bills;
- An adapter for taps, operating at a resource saving low-flow rate of 2.5l per minute, saving water and energy with a return on investment of less than six months;
- A magnetic fuel conditioning unit that gives verified reductions in gas or oil consumption. Reduces fuel costs by at least 6%;
- A water conditioning product that prevents limescale, removes existing deposits and creates softer water without any on-going costs; and
- Plug and play wireless lighting control, which reduces energy consumption up to 78%.
