The latest tower will be next to the Regal West Point building currently being built (wates.co.uk)
Wates is to construct Birmingham’s latest high-rise development after agreeing contract terms for a £31.6m residential project.
The 30-storey scheme will be client Regal West Point’s second apartment building at The Bank development in Birmingham city centre.
Located on Broad Street, the skyscraper will become one of the Second City’s tallest buildings, and stand nine storeys higher than its neighbour, which is also being built by Wates.
Last month, developer Nikal unveiled proposals for what would be the tallest residential tower in Birmingham at 46 storeys. In September, rival Modal submitted plans for a 42-storey residential building nearby.
Wates has already begun work on the new Regal West Point building, which will encompass 205 high quality apartments, and is expected to complete the project in Autumn 2019.
Like the first building, the new 16,055 sq m scheme at The Bank is designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects.
Work on the first building at The Bank was recently marked with a topping out ceremony. The first of its 189 apartments will be ready for occupation in July 2018.
Wates’s portfolio of projects across Birmingham includes Ardstone Capital’s Grade A office development at Phoenix House, the development of Eastside City Park and the fit-out of Gowling WLG’s premises at Two Snowhill.
John Carlin, business unit director, Wates Construction Midlands, said: “Collaborating with Regal on The Bank and creating a striking new addition to Birmingham’s skyline has been a fantastic experience for our Birmingham team. We are therefore honoured that our relationship is continuing with the second building at The Bank.
“When complete, the two buildings of The Bank will be a benchmark for urban residential schemes in Birmingham. This is an incredibly exciting time for the city, with HSBC’s relocation of its UK headquarters to 1 Centenary Square, HS2 set to revolutionise the region’s transport offering and it being selected as the preferred British bidder for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
“Our work at The Bank will provide Birmingham with two new buildings, befitting its growing status as a vibrant, cosmopolitan and enterprising city.”
