The government can play a key role in addressing the construction skills shortage by moving forward with its major infrastructure projects.
Speaking to CIOB vice president, Charles Egbu as part of the Construction Leaders Insights Series, Patrick Flaherty, chief executive of Aecom, UK said.
Flaherty, said that it was imperative for the creation of jobs as well as well as encouraging young people into the industry that the government presses ahead with its infrastructure programme.
He said they were encouraged by the recent decisions on major projects such as Hinkley and Heathrow but this momentum needed to continue.
Elsewhere he said industry bodies such the CIOB would play a critical role in regards plugging the skills shortage but he believed there needs to be collective and collaborative work among other institutions such as Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Association of Consultancy Engineering and Institute of Civil Engineers.
