A VolkerFitzpatrick team has replaced 48 wooden wheel timbers with fibre-reinforced foamed urethane alternatives on Barnes Bridge, south-west London.

The new wheel timbers are produced from recycled material and have an extended lifespan of 50 years. VolkerFitzpatrick says they are more durable and require less maintenance.

VolkerFitzpatrick also strengthened the spans underneath the Grade II-listed bridge on scaffold platforms. The project was part of maintenance works delivered over a six-day closure of the Hounslow Loop line between Kew Bridge and Barnes.
