Video | Structures take shape on Tolent’s £84.5m Milburngate job

Contractor Tolent has completed the steel frame for a 92-bed Premier Inn hotel in Durham and is now in the process of building the steel frame for a block containing 153 build-to-rent apartments.

The firm started an £84.5m contract to build the 450,000ft2 mixed-use development in June last year. The site, on the banks of the river Wear, is surrounded by a 236m retaining wall. Construction of the wall involved the use of approximately 20,000m3 of concrete, and required the use of one of the largest piling rigs in the UK.

There will also be retail and leisure units on site including an Everyman cinema, Pitcher & Piano, Bar + Block and Miller and Carter.

Meanwhile, foundation works have started on 5,000m2 of speculative offices.

Milburngate is being developed by a joint venture partnership between Arlington Real Estate and Richardson, supported by a £120m forward funding commitment from LaSalle Investment Management.
