Video | HS2 factory producing 196 tunnel segments per day

Two factories are producing 196 pre-cast concrete segments a day to line the 16km twin-bored tunnel running under the Chilterns.

Align, a joint venture between Bouygues, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick, is delivering the Central 1 (C1) package of HS2 Phase 1 that consists of 21.6km of high speed rail infrastructure, including the tunnel and a 3.37km viaduct across the Colne Valley.

The factories at the south portal of the tunnel produce the segments before they are transported by two giant gantry trains.

The first of the tunnel boring machines to be used to excavate the tunnels, called Florence, was launched at the site in May this year.

In total, 112,000 individual segments will be produced to line the tunnels.

  1. What a waste of resources and time. This tunnel is being bored into the aquifer which produces 3.2 million people’s daily Drinking Water! Surely this should be stopped now instead of proceeding at cost to our water supplies. The aquifer is a fundamental life source.

  2. Shame its at the expense of cement supplies to the rest of the uk : well done Boris, you will be proud!

  3. Great to see HS2 progressing, let’s get this construction going and LEVEL UP BRITAIN

  4. It’s costing the country billions to build this bloody railway and its leaving the rest of the country on its knees as we cannot get hold of basic supplies for building works to continue at the request of our government who wants more houses. The smaller companies literally cannot take the cost increases. Although its great for the industries involved its going to be years before prices and supply to everyone else returns to “normal”
